Sleeping in a car or van is allowed in many campsites, though you will have to do some planning to make sure that when you arrive, you have a place to stay. Campgrounds typically will require a fee and reservations. Pull Through—A campsite where you can pull your rig through instead of backing in. Nearby is the NC Stone Mountain Golf Club with a full 18 holes. A few miles away is the scenic Stone Mountain State Park for hiking, fishing, and other activities. I’ve been traveling since then, staying exclusively at spots where I can spend the night for free — Walmart parking lots for the most part. They have all welcomed me warmly when I ask at customer service if RVs are allowed to spend the night.
Nestled among the mountains in the northeastern corner of the state, Unicoi State Park includes more than 100 campsites, about a dozen of which have full hookups. Sites with only water and electric hookups are also available, as are primitive tent sites, rustic cabins and fully furnished lodge rooms. The campground includes modern restrooms, hot showers, laundry facilities and an RV dump station. During your stay, you can explore 8 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails or go swimming, fishing, canoeing or kayaking on Unicoi Lake.
